Sep 5 2018.
For the past 9 years, the dog had good skin. Then the skin flakes came in abundance. The ears were very itchy. The owner saw vets as frequently as monthly, but the flakes keep falling.
In May 2018, he came for ear infection treatment. Ear irrigation was done. Anti-fungal and shampoos were prescribed. "The skin would take months to recover," I advised skin review a month later but he did not turn up.
Today, he came for clipping of the coat. The left ear is still v painful (dog wants to bite vet, as seen in the video), but the right ear is OK. Lower belly is very itchy and therefore blackened by continuous licking.
UVL +ve flourescence for ringworm for flakes around the neck and ears.
"It is best to review the skin one month after treatment," I said to the owner who only wanted clipping of coat and the shampoos.
"The skin of the ear flap has lightened to become pink, indicating that the ears are not very itchy compared to the past years!". There are very few flakes seen on my consultation table.
Blood test in May 2018 during first consultation showed liver disorder but no anaemia or bacterial infections of the blood. Kidneys were normal.
Skin diseases may need more than 3 treatments and reviews to resolve. Many owners do not come back for the 2nd review one month after treatment.
For this "good" outcome of no more skin flakes, the owner has confidence in the clinic to treat the skin disease. The dog is not fully cured yet although shampoos and previous anti-fungal medication had helped considerably in reducing the skin flaking.
