Have you ever wanted to make your own chords and chord progressions instead of relying on loops, samples or chord packs? I know that eventually i wanted to start making original chord progressions that are mine. So started researching how to make chords and how to make chord progressions. This tutorial on how to make chord progressions is a brief depiction of what i was able to learn!
To start making chord progressions, you first need to know the basics of making a chord. The basis of almost any chord is a triad. This is a three note chord that consists of a first, a third and a fifth. To make a triad, pick a root note, then skip the next note in the scale. Place your second note on the third note of the scale. Finally, repeat this process and place you third note on the fifth note of the scale. Now you have a mad a major triad chord.
To make this a minor triad chord, simply lower the top note down one.
Now we move on to making seventh chords and how to make a ninth chord.
For a seventh chord, start with your triad and skip the next note in the scale. Then add the final note on the next one. Repeat this process to make a ninth chord.
To make a suspended chord, start with the major or minor triad chord, then take the middle note up one note
To make a diminished chord, take the middle and top note of the triad and move them down one note.
Finally, how to make an augmented chord is simple. Just take the top note of your triad chord and move it up one note.
Now that you know how to make basic chords, you can move on with how to make chord progressions. To make a chord progression, i like to pick a scale and find a set of root notes that sound together first. If you find root notes that sound good, you know your chords will sound good together.
Once you have your root notes, start by making triad chords out of them. Play with making your chord progression out of major chords, minor chords or a combination of both. Now that you have made your basic chords, you can alter the timing of the progression slightly to add movement. From here, add some upper harmonics by making seventh chords or ninth chords depending on what your chord progression requires. Another thing i like to do is invert the middle notes of the chord by raising them up one octave. Finally, add some filler notes to your chord progression. Filler notes are little notes between the main body of the chords that keep the whole chord progression moving forward. Think of this as a topline.
And look at that, you've made a set of chords and made them into a chord progression!
