First video in a series in which I will defeat all bosses in Bloodborne using the trusty Hunter Axe. In this video, I go up against the Cleric Beast, an optional boss and usually the first one that players encounter. This boss is strong against blunt damage and weak to everything that the Hunter Axe lacks, so it can be a fairly challenging fight for an novice axe-wielder. Or, as I found, even an experienced one.
Next up: Father Gasciogne, of course.
Why this video series? Bloodborne was my first foray into the From Software oeuvre and I really didn't know what I was doing on my first playthrough. I selected the Hunter Axe as my first weapon almost arbitrarily and ended up using it as my primary weapon through the whole game, taking it to +10. Having played through the game a few times now, it's surprising how much stronger the Saw Cleaver is against the enemies and bosses of the first several areas. In retrospect the axe was not the best choice for a beginning player, but I learned to love it. So I thought it would be fun to go back equipped with my greatly enhanced knowledge of the game, but armed with the weapon that I used to cut my teeth.
It was also frustrating sometimes to watch videos where the player so easily defeats a boss using a weapon that is optimized for that fight. In case there are any others out there struggling through a boss fight but committed to using this weapon, these videos should, at the very least, show that success is possible.
I've developed some ground rules to make sure that I am not over- or under-powered in these fights, and to force myself to rely mostly on melee strategy with the Axe:
- I will not farm for blood echoes or upgrade materials. I will upgrade my character and weapon with whatever I earn in a straight playthrough of the game.
- I will use items sparingly. I reserve the right to buff the Axe with fire or bolt paper, and of course to heal myself or cure poisoning, but I will not be spamming enemies with molotovs or poison knives.
- I will not summon NPCs or other players to assist me. These will strictly be 1:1 fights.
- I will not spend any Insight acquired through boss fights.
I don't plan on doing any chalice dungeon bosses, but I may post some hunter NPC battles, because they are some of the most fun and difficult in the game.
That's it. Hope you enjoy and/or that this is helpful in some way. Let me know everything that I did wrong in the comments.
