A gummy smile is defined as an excessive display of gum tissue above the upper front teeth. This can be caused by a variety of factors such as vertical maxillary excess, partial or abnormal dental eruption, deep overbites, and having a short upper lip. There are also a variety of treatments which include Botox treatment, surgery, and orthodontic treatment with and without TAD (temporary anchorage devices).

In many of the previous showcases, we demonstrated the correction of a deep overbite with the leveling of the lower Curve of Spee. In our case of the week, the patient had a 100% overlap of the upper front teeth over the lower teeth and a gummy smile. Measured at 5mm between the upper lip and the upper border of the incisors, the patient’s primary concern was a gummy smile. Her excessive gumminess at smile was primarily due to a deep Curve of Spee on the upper arch. Finishing in 20 months of braces treatment, the upper Curve of Spee was leveled and the gumminess of her smile reduced to 2-3mm of gum show at smile.
