For our tasting today Wine-Searcher's Wine Director, David Allen MW. tastes an example of a Gewurztraminer from Ochota barrens in the Adelaide Hills, that is slightly older than her realized. The wine concerned is Ochota Barrels 'Weird Berries in the Woods' Adelaide Hills Gerwurtztraminer 2017.

Founded by Amber and Taras Ochota in 2008, the Ochota Barrels winery is located in the Basket Range sub-region of the Adelaide Hills. Their portfolio comprises small-batch, single vineyard wines sourced from throughout the Barossa, McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. Minimal intervention is practiced in the winery, with controlled pigeage, hand cap-immersion and spontaneous indigenous fermentations employed to give complexity in the winemaking process. Post fermentation, sulphur dioxide additions are kept to a minimum. Ochota wines are known for their freshness, texture and complexity.

Taras Ochota worked extensively throughout Europe in Italy and Sweden in the 1990s. Soon after Ochota Barrels was established, Ochota was widely considered as a contemporary wine pioneer in Australia, known for creating minimal intervention wines that were consistently of high quality. Sadly Taras sadly passed away in 2020 at the age of 49. This wine comes from the first vintage made after his passing.
