In this video I am going to show you the basics for doing perfect parries in Ghost of Tsushima and how to do this against every single basic enemy unit in the early game.
There are 2 ways to do perfect parries in Ghost of Tsushima: The hard way and the hardest way.
The hard way is using a special Charm. To get this, you are going to make your way to the Spring Falls Shrine in the Komoda Region, in the Northern part of Izuzu and get to the top. This will grant you the Charm of Mizu No Kami, which makes parries, perfect parries and, perfect dodges easier to perform, but, I got to be honest, I equipped it for half an hour or so, and really didn't feel a major difference, the time window seemed basically the same as before, and that leads me to the main point of this video: you need to observe the enemy, aka, the harder way to parry.
Every single enemy in the game (at least so far) can be parried in one way or another. The thing is that you need to pay close attention to their movements because there is an exact moment you have to press L1 in order to make the perfect parry. The game marks a perfect parry the moment Jin's weapon and the enemy weapon are just starting to clash and a parry is executed, but this doesn't mean that you have to press the button in THAT exact moment, you have to do it BEFORE.
Swordman - This guy has 2 basic movements.
In the first one he crosses his arm and attacks from the left: When you see his fist covering the face when he is about to slice, press the L1 button to perfect parry.
Second attack is a forward slash: when you see his sword on top of his head, press the L1 .
Small Shield - This is one of the easy ones because he only has one move. He will cross his sword in front of his shield and just as soon as he begins to slice, press the L1.
Big Shield Guy - This one is even easier than the small shield guy, just wait until you see his arm dissapear behind his body when slicing and press L1.
Now, let's move on with archers, double sworded guys and spearmen: To parry the following enemies you need to buy specific techniques in the Deflect Skill tree, so take that into consideration.
ARROWS - This is probably the easiest one of all, as soon as you hear that he fires his bow, spam the L1 until the arrow hits. As easy as that! No perfect timing required for this one!
SPEARman- This is probably the most difficult of all the basic units. Try to keep your distance with this one so you have enough time to react.
He will move forward and raise his spear to a horizontal position to thrust. You can see here the spear aligns with his right leg, as soon as it starts to go back, press the L1.
Finally the DOUBLE SWORDED guy - This is the most complex of the basic enemy units because he has a ton of different attacks.
When he jumps towards you, as soon as you see him extending his arm, press L1.
When he raises his sword above past his head, wait until it just comes back and passes the invisible line on his head to press l1 to perfect parry.
When he raises both of his swords, wait until he starts to lower them, not when they are at the top, and then press L1.
When he is going to thrust with both of his swords, wait until the top sword is just hitting his head to press L1.
Just to close the video I would like to share a couple of details for you to make your practice a little bit easier. Try roaming around to find a small enemy group, eliminate all members but the one that you want to focus your practice with and then, start parrying. Don't do this with larger groups because you will get overwhelmed and nervous and it is more difficult to parry this way. So, start small, then go for bigger groups.
There is a very useful skill that you can unlock called Resolved Parry. This one is perfect when you need to practice because you continue to gain resolve when doing any parry or perfect parry. This way you can heal as you gain resolve over and over again while you are practicing.
Finally, try to be aware of your progression. You should move on from blocking only, to parrying and then perfect parrying. Work on your confidence. Don't go right away for the perfect parry, first try to make yourself comfortable with normal parries and then go for the perfect one.
