Castlecomer Discovery Reaching New Heights After Lockdown!
After 3 months of lockdown, Castlecomer Discovery Park is back in action and reaching new heights as people come to play in the great outdoors.
Castlecomer Discovery Park is now open every day for the summer holidays. The park is back operating but with some new safety measures in place. Visitors can still enjoy the 80 acres of stunning woodland and lakes , adventure activities including tree top walks, Ireland’s longest zip wire and high ropes challenge, climbing walls, boating, archery, adventure playgrounds, woodland café and orienteering.
“The last number of months have been extremely challenging, especially since all our school tours had to be cancelled. But we are really delighted to be able to get the summer season up and running. We have worked very hard to ensure that customers are as safe as possible and that we can continue providing adventure, fun and high quality days out” Kathy Purcell, Castlecomer Discovery Park Manager
For parents and children, the elf and fairy village has always a huge draw with delicious refreshments available at the Canopy Café. For coffee lovers we serve a delicious blend of coffee that is roasted in Waterford “Coffee House Lane” is going down a big hit as customers can enjoy their refreshments alfresco.
“We have had to make some amendments to our programme, for instance we wont have the bouncing nets available due to inability to social distance but we have a really great family trail using “Toy Story” as a theme. We are also asking our customers to book on line if possible”
The family favourite movie “Toy Story” provides the theme for our family trail which brings families around the park as they hunt for clues and markers. Each child will receive a toy on completion of the trail. This is a great way for families to connect in nature while having lots of fun. The price is €7.50 per child (adults free).
There is something here for all ages, and we are especially proud to home IRELAND’S LONGEST ZIP WIRE! Now that is something to tick off the bucket list. It’s over 300 metres long and over 35 metres over ground at its highest point. A thrilling outdoor activity the Zip Line is accompanied by two high-ropes courses called the Octagonal High Ropes Challenge. These are set in high in the woodlands with views over our two lakes.
Visit our Tree Top Walk course nestled in the Sycamore tree tops! This stunning tree top walk is 140 metre long and gives views around the 70 acre natural woodland park. Or if you want to try something a little less daunting, why not reach new heights on our great outdoor climbing wall, with varying levels for all the family to enjoy.
We’ve got something for everyone, with 6km of walking trails, woodland orienteering trails, pedal boats, canoes, our fascinating interactive coal mining exhibition telling the story of the local mining heritage. Then take a walk around the craft yard, where you can meet the craft makers and find a novel gift. Located just over 90 minutes south of Dublin, the Castlecomer Experience in Kilkenny is a treat for the entire family.
We are a not for profit social enterprise…
This ‘young’ park is continuously evolving to ensure that the rich cultural heritage bequeathed through the work of the miners and Captain Wandesforde is commemorated. Preserving the character of the old buildings and developing the former ‘Leisure Park’ to a multi activity woodland park for ‘all to enjoy’ is a key element for the vision of the park – and more than just a tag line in our logo!
The park is a social/community enterprise operating on a Non Profit basis. It’s supported by volunteers from the local community, and governed by a board of voluntary directors. Any profit is re-directed to developing the park.
