In this episode of Wild with Cyril I head to a low and slow coarse stream in the south of England in search of the fish that lurk within. My chosen tactic is as simple rig of 1 hook and 1 lobworm. That's it. I cast the worm into likely looking areas and feel for bites by touching the line.
I am initially unsuccessful, despite getting a follow from a perch, and head continually up the river casting as I go. With no hook ups, I head back to the spot where I saw a perch following my bait and try casting there again. I am rewarded with my persistence by hooking into a nice perch which, after some difficulty owing to a step bank, I am able to net. The perch is unhooked and returned to the river.
I cast again into the swim and this time hook up to an even larger perch. After another struggle owing to the steep bank, the perch is unhooked and returned safely.
Continuing to fish the swim with the same basic rig hooks me up again. This time with a small chub!
I show how effective a worm and hook can be when targeting coarse rivers in low water conditions.
