Desolate Host (Soul Engine) is a boss in the new Tomb of Sargeras raid released in Legion Patch 7.2! This Heroic Desolate Host Guide/Normal Desolate Host Guide for ToS walks you through the Heroic and Normal difficulty Desolate Host Soul Enginefight in Tomb of Sargeras. Mythic difficulty Tomb of Sargeras , and will have additional Mythic-only mechanics not shown here. LFR Desolate Host has the same mechanics as Normal Desolate Host, except that the second phase where the actual Desolate Host comes out is not included.
Desolate Host is a fight that's all about good raid communication. The raid group needs to be split in half- half up 'top' in the Corporeal Realm and half 'down below' in the Spirit Realm. To switch between the two realms both before and during the Desolate Host/Soul Engine fight, click (once!) on a Spirit Font lining the room. In this video I am missing footage for a few Spirit Realm mechanics (Wither and Wailing Souls, as well as a good demonstration of Shattering Scream) because as a Shadow Priest with a terribly long cooldown on my kick I'm typically assigned to the Corporeal realm.
There are many mechanics between the two phases. One tank should be assigned to each realm- one fighting the Soul Engine and the other tanking Soul Queen Dejahna. The Soul Queen will cast the kickable Crush Mind will the Soul Engine will be spamming Bone Shards. It's best to put the tank with better magic damage reduction down in the Spirit Realm to help reduce overall Crush Mind damage.
In both the Spirit Realm and Corporeal Realm of the Soul Engine/Desolate Host fight, adds take priority over the boss. On LFR and Normal difficulties, you can just focus down the adds and get back to the boss. On Heroic, at 50% the Corporeal Realm adds will become mostly immune with Bone Armor. You need to place a Shattering Scream explosion (from the Fallen Priestess channel, don't kick it for this) within 5 yards of the location of the Bone Armor adds to take down the Bone Armor buff. Tricky.
If you get Soulbind, meet up with your buddy. It's best to establish a stack point in the middle to go to with Soulbind so you don't cleave down the entire raid chasing down your friend.
For Sundering Doom and Doomed Sundering, you'll be alternately stacking in and getting away from the Desolate Host boss. If he has an opaque (solid) purple swirl under him, get away. If it's a purple ring/circle that's open inside, get in. To brush up on the other numerous mechanics of the Normal/Heroic Desolate Host/Soul Engine fight you should really just watch the video nobody reads this far down in a YouTube comment anyways.
