Antique Pepper Grinder Restoration | Mister Patina

In this Video im restoring an antique pepper grinder, which was given to me by my friend Awat. I couldn’t find any brands, so I have no clue where it is from - nor how old it is. But that doesn’t matter - this beauty deserves a nice makeover!

I started with disassembling the pepper grinder, some screws were very rusty and stuck, but the rest was really easygoing. While disassembling I could find a lot of rust on the pepper grinder, which couldn’t be restored. So I had to make them new later. The next thing on the pepper grinder restoration was to care for the wooden body. It was in a good condition, so I put it on the lathe mill and sanded it from 80-400 grit and milled it perfectly round again. After that I gave it a nice paintjob.

Next step was restoring the rusted grinding wheels, I put them both in the lathe mill for milling the surfaces even again and gave them a nice wirebrushing and sanding to make them shiny and look like new.

The upper plate of the pepper grinder was so rusty, that I had to make a new one. I made a template on a new piece of metal, cut it roughly in shape and put it on the lathe mill. After milling this piece in perfect shape, I drilled new wholes on the der drill and milled them up a little bit. Last step was sanding and filing.

After that I took care of restoring the small parts of this pepper mill. Some of them got a nice filing, some of them got sanded on the lathe mill for perfect round shape. All parts were ready for polishing now, instead of one part which got blued with fire and oil. The rest of the parts of this antique pepper mill got polished with a nice compound.

The last step on this rusty restoration was to reassemble the pepper mill. I had to press some parts together, the rest was pretty easygoing. The final test of this pepper grinder shows, that it works perfectly fine. It grinds the pepper in fine granules.
