2024 TMEA Jazz Bass Etude no. 2
Performed by Dr. Utah Hamrick
Texas State University
- This etude is written over the changes to Moonlight in Vermont by Karl Sussedorf with lyrics by John Blackburn. It has been recorded by a wide range of artists, from Chet Baker to Ella Fitzgerald to Willie Nelson!
- The form of this tune is a little unconventional in that it's an AABA but the A sections are only 6 measures each. With an 8 measure bridge, the form ends after the solo, at the end of measure 26. In this case measure 27 to the end is an extension of the form, almost a coda.
- As with every ballad etude, be sure to be precise with the differences between triplets and sixteenth notes
- In measure 12 you may want to set yourself up to play the Bb on the E string, so you can play beat 3 and 4 on the same string
- Both measure 4 and 7 have Bb's that should be played on the D string directly across from the high Eb before or after.
-Don't forget the low Ab's!
