President Putin has congratulated his military leadership declaring that the war had shifted in Russia’s favour after Ukraine’s counteroffensive stalled.
He said: “Our troops are holding the initiative. We are effectively doing what we think is needed, doing what we want. Where our commanders consider it necessary to stick to active defences they are doing so, and we are improving our positions where it’s needed.”
He made the remarks as the commander of Ukraine’s land forces, General Syrsky, conceded his troops faced a difficult situation, running low on ammunition against “superior weapons and numbers”. He said Russian forces were attacking from Bakhmut towards the larger cities of Kramatorsk and Slovyansk in a bid to take the entire Donbas region, as well as at Lyman and Avdiivka.
