New Mexico's Gila Wilderness has the distinction of being the world's first designated wilderness area, an act that took place in 1924. Part of this designation protects the area by not allowing any motorized or mechanized vehicles inside it, including bicycles. Commercial activities like mining or logging are also not allowed, and no buildings can be erected within the 872 square miles of protected land. You can, however, fish and camp as long as you have a permit.
One of the area's major draws are its hot springs, naturally occurring mineral-rich pools—you can think of them as Mother Nature's hot tubs. There are many therapeutic benefits to soaking in a hot spring, like boosting circulation, reducing stress, and relieving pain. So make sure to hit up a couple—such as Lightfeather and Faywood Hot Springs.
