Officially called the "Museum of Partisan Glory," the catacombs consist of three levels and reach a depth of 60 meters/120 feet below sea level. Only the middle level is open for tourists.
During World War II the catacombs served as hiding places for Soviet partisans and the very interesting tour took us past areas divided into a kitchen, field hospital, separate alcove for women partisans, armaments, etc. The Germans tried in vain to penetrate the catacombs by flooding with water, gas, and troops but partisans managed to survive.
I can't even imagine living like this for days that stretched into years, underground. The tour ends in a small museum with photographs, art, and documents devoted to the partisan history.
