Nvidia Shield TV 2017
The best 4K media and gaming streamer you can buy has been given a redesign for 2017, but the redesign is more internal than external.
If you have found yourself in the market for a 4K HDR video streamer that can also stream 1080p games from both the cloud and your PC, the Nvidia Shield is by far your best option, in fact it’s only competitor is it’s previous iteration.
If all that power, and it’s a considerable amount of power, even if it is using the original chip, isn’t up your street, there are other options from an Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV/stick or Google Chromecast or even a Roku, but sometimes to get the best you need the best, and from our review you will agree that the Nvidia Shield offers everything you could possibly need at a price that is easy to swallow for gamers and streamers.
Nvidia Shield TV 2017: Hardware/Software
It's a smaller Shield TV -- that's pretty much it, the Shield TV is 40% slimmer than the previous model and occupies much less space, measuring 159mm wide, 98mm deep and 26mm tall at its chunkiest geometrically designed corner.
Design wise, the new Shield keeps the sharp, angular design from the original, which is still eye catching, and with it’s compact size, it is always eye-catching and remarkable that it is as powerful as it is. It certainly has a much more appealing look,
when compared to generically designed set-top boxes or sticks.
If you're looking for massive, sweeping, all-encompassing changes, you'll find them in the new Shield controller. It's slimmer, sleeker and far easier to hold than its bulky predecessor, which was simply a chunky uncomfortable disaster. The new controller sports an attractive polygonal design, which makes it look like it actually belongs with the Shield. Most importantly, everything about the new controller feels well thought out, like an actual console controller, rather than a cheap Amazon 3rd party knock off - every button is more responsive, reminiscent of an Xbox One controller, but the size is much more comfortable, and the analog sticks are much more fluid but the directional pad is still a bit stiff, but even that still feels improved.
Nvidia Shield TV 2017 Gaming: All the Gaming
This is where Nvidia Shield TV really earns its modest price, in the wide spectrum of streaming boxes and next-gen gaming consoles the Shield finds it’s home as the perfect solution not only for hardcore PC gamers where it can locally stream from your PC at full 1080p resolution, an incredibly impressive feat alongside streaming from the GEForce Now cloud service, it’s basically Netflix for gaming, which has been revamped for 2017. It's now powered by GeForce 10-series GPUs, which should be able to handle high-end games easily. NVIDIA says it's also made various upgrades to the service that should help it run more smoothly and with less latency than before.
Nvidia Shield TV 2017: Video Performance
It's powerful, it’s fast, and has every available service you could want from Netflix (including Netflix 4K), Amazon TV (4k), YouTube (4k), Now TV, and Kodi as well as Plex are all supported via Nvidia-specific versions of the apps and they look fantastic. Further to its video abilities why settle for just a Chromecast, when you can have so much more, with Chromecast built in, it’s the perfect video solution.
