Sawara Grand Festival is one of the three major festivals in the Kanto region and has been around for over 300 years.
😍 Floats carrying large dolls and ornaments of historical figures are pulled around Koedo Sawara.
🤗 The unique development of the floats has influenced the festival culture of the neighboring area, and the festival has been registered as a UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage!
🤩 The floats here are incredible. They are made of zelkova wood and decorated with massive Kanto carvings. The upper part of the float is decorated with a 4-meter-high doll made by a master doll maker in the Edo and Meiji Periods.
👀 The floats, which are decorated with the Sawara-Hayashi, one of Japan’s three most popular musical instruments, echo through the town as they pass by the eaves of houses on the streets of Koedo, a district designated as a national preservation area for important traditional buildings.
July 12th-14th, Sawara, Chiba. Closest station is Sawara Station 佐原駅, About 1.5 hour from Tokyo Station, 2 hours from Shinjuku Station.
