Jordan Peterson’s Dominance Hierarchy Theory asserts that men are “hard-wired” to be aware of where they each stand in the masculine or alpha “pecking order,” or place in our society.

In sum, we know where we rank, and, by and large, nearly every man accepts his ranking. But, contrary to Peterson’s extended conclusion that this hierarchy is akin to a “caste” system where roles rarely change much over time, there actually are simple tools at our disposal to improve and upgrade our standing on this social ladder.

First, when interacting with another man who reflects an attitude that he is superior to you in the hierarchy, start by adjusting your style of communicating from a “rapport neutral” approach, to what we term a “rapport breaking” mode.

Speak in a calm, relaxed confident voice, with a lower pitched tone, and a slightly slower delivery pace. Avoid a high pitched, rapid- paced, supplicative voice, which will only reinforce your anxiousness and lower status.

Second, change your usual body language by turning 30-45 degrees away from him, so you are speaking slightly over your shoulder without facing him squarely.

This subtly tells him you are not intensely interested in what he is saying, or in how you are responding. The message you pass along is then clear---you are at his social level, or even higher.
