Why you want magnesium, vitamin K2, & vitamin D in your calcium supplement!
.
Magnesium is needed to create the active form of vitamin D. Vitamin D helps calcium to be absorbed from the small intestine and into the blood stream.
Next there are bone cells called osteoblasts that produce a protein called osteocalcin which binds to calcium and promotes bone mineralization essentially making the bone skeleton stronger and less susceptible to fracture. Now osteocalcin can only do this if it is first activated. And vitamin k2 is required in that activation process.
Additionally vitamin K2 is needed to activate what’s called MGP or the matrix GLa protein which, and this is really cool, inhibits the calcification of arteries and cartilage and helps deliver calcium from these areas to the bone, facilitating healthy bone formation.
.
This is super important because lately what I’ve read from different research studies is that when people are supplementing calcium without having ample amounts of vitamin K2 present in the body, they are seeing an increase in heart disease. Hardening of the arteries and plaque formation - which is not good. So we want to have Vitamin K2 present because it promotes arterial flexibility by preventing accumulation of arterial calcium.
.
So moral of the story here is, if you’re taking a calcium supplement, take one that includes magnesium, vitamin K2, and vitamin D. Or make sure your consuming foods that contain magnesium & vitamin K2 so that you have ample amounts of it in the body so that you can actually absorb & use the calcium found in your calcium supplement.
