Professor Oliver Schmidtke is Director of the Centre for Global Studies (CFGS) and Jean Monnet Chair in European Politics and History at the University of Victoria.
During his interview, he speaks about how populism prevents what is normally associated with a functioning democracy, such as deliberation, exchange of better ideas and openness to engage a dialogue. In his next question: "What Are The Biggest Challenges Democracy Is Facing Today?" he talks about how populist parties, especially from the far right, have set the political agenda in European countries, and their strength is also reflected in the relative weakness of the progressive left-wing opposition. He says that we need something that provides the space for different kind of dialogue and exchange in democratic engagement.
This video is part of the CEDoD project and was produced as part of the event "Constitutionalism in the Age of Populism", which took place on 6-8 March, 2020 in Victoria, BC. CEDoD stands for “Canada Europe Dialogue on Democracy: Democratic Deficit and the Rise of Populism in Europe”.
