What do tennis and pearl diving have in common? Find out as we reveal the story behind trophies designed for the 13th Mubadala World Tennis Championship taking place in Abu Dhabi.

‘Al Dean’ is a special woven bag that pearl hunters would wear around their necks as they dove in search for sea oysters, where real pearls are formed. This small net inspired LASVIT’s designer Martin Gallo to design a trophy called Pearling Season for this year's winner of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship. "I wanted to invoke the wonderful moment when the oyster opens and reveals a beautiful pearl," says Gallo.
The designer also played with the idea of a successful hunt, so his half-opened oyster hides a pearl lying in an Al Dean net, looking like a tennis ball bouncing off racket strings in a winning stroke. "Pearling Season is supposed to be an exceptional award for a very exceptional athlete, and it should also respect and remind people of national traditions," adds the designer.
“Through the Mubadala World Tennis Championship we are able to connect the worlds of design and sport and are very proud to see our trophy raised by some of the world’s best tennis players here in Abu Dhabi,” says Leon Jakimič, owner and president of LASVIT.
