Prague Castle, known locally as Pražský hrad, is a magnificent castle complex that serves as the official residence and workplace for the president of the Czech Republic. Originally built in the 9th century, it has been the seat of power for various rulers throughout history, including the kings of Bohemia, Holy Roman emperors, and presidents of Czechoslovakia. In fact, "Prague Castle" or simply "the Castle" or "the Hrad" are often used as metonymy for the president and his advisors. The castle's history started in 870 when the first walled building, the Church of the Virgin Mary, was constructed on its grounds. Throughout the first half of the 10th century, the Basilica of Saint George and Basilica of St. Vitus were established under the reign of Vratislaus I, Duke of Bohemia, and his son, St. Wenceslaus.
