Heston's Mission Impossible
Heston Blumenthal uses his maverick culinary genius to dramatically re-invent food production at four great British institutions.
Heston Blumenthal is one of the very best chefs in the world. He's made his name with original and, some might say, downright bizarre dishes served at his famous restaurant, The Fat Duck : snail porridge, egg & bacon ice-cream and fish n' chips (served with an iPod)!
Now Heston is taking his totally unique approach to food out to the wider world. In each episode, the maverick chef uses his culinary genius to tackle the kitchen dilemmas of a major institution. But are his techniques palatable with their profit margins?
The kitchens of an NHS hospital, the Cineworld chain of cinemas, British Airways and the Royal Navy all come under scrutiny as Heston conducts outrageous and bizarre experiments in his quest to find solutions where other chefs have failed. Whilst the Alder Hey Children's Hospital serves up the best in NHS healthcare, its kitchens leave the young patients uninspired. Can Heston overcome the limited budget and sceptical staff and inject fun into mealtimes? At Cineworld Heston hopes to trade in the popcorn for a movie-inspired menu, but when his edible sperm shake proves hard to swallow will a happy ending elude him? Counter space proves a problem at 37,000 ft when Heston considers the British Airways meal tray. Perhaps the solution lies in magical bento boxes. Feeding a Navy submarine crew is Heston's final challenge. Can he steer the sailors off the stodge, and still make it onto the captain's table?
The kitchen staff in each organisation are flabbergasted by Heston's seemingly impossible ambitions. But Heston's biggest challenge comes in the toughest test of all: the real world, where the customers are his toughest critics...
