STORYLINE
Russian troops continued manning a checkpoint near the Georgian city of Gori early on Friday - the day that both Russia's president and defence minister had promised would end with a complete pullback from Georgian territory invaded nearly two weeks ago.
The checkpoint is located some six kilometres (3.7 miles) outside the central city which straddles the vital west-east highway to Tbilisi.
A top Russian general said on Thursday it could be 10 days before the bulk of the troops had gone and the mixed signals from Moscow left Georgians guessing about Russia's intentions nearly a week after a cease-fire deal.
Under the deal, Russian forces were to pull back to positions they held before intense fighting broke out August 7 in the Russian-backed Georgian separatist region of South Ossetia.
Russia has said it will keep troops in South Ossetia - where Russia had a peacekeeping contingent for more than a decade - and in a buffer zone in Georgia proper around the region's border.
