Come all you young females where ever you may be
Beware of false swearing and false perjury
For it's by a young female I am wounded for soon
You'll see I'm cut down in the pride of my bloom.
It was last Monday morn as I lay on my bed
A young man came to me to me
and these words he said
Rise up Martin Eagan and fly you elsewhere
For vengeance is sworn you by young Fanny Blair.
Now young Fanny Blair she's eleven years old
And as I must die now the truth will be told
I never stole with her not in all my life time
It's hard thing to die for another man's crime
On the day of my trial squire Vernon was there
And on the green table he's handed Miss Blair
False oath she is swearing I'm ashamed for to tell
And the judge says
"Ah, someone has tutored you well"
When they heard young Eagan
was sentenced to die
The people rose up with a murmuring cry
"If we catch her we'll burn her
she's a perjuring whore
Young Eagan dies innocent of that we're quite sure"
Well there's just one more thing
that I ask of my friends
Take me to Greenfield's one night by themselves
And bury my body up on Merrylee moor
And pray that the great God will pardon this soul
