At some point someone added a few words to the double diamond which now looking back caused a big mess. A mess that we now have to clean up.
The double diamond illustrates a diverging and converging process. And it does that pretty well.
The problem is that when you add words that suggest stages of a design process to the double diamond it turns into a representation that is often very disconnected with reality. Sure it looks nice in the model.
Of course a design process moves through time and has a linearity. But by now I'm quite convinced that words like framing, research, ideation, testing, scaling, etc. don't describe this progression through time in an accurate fashion.
I would argue that we should think about these words in "modes of operation" rather than in stages of the design process.
Because in a real design project you bounce between research and ideation all the time. That's just how design works.
So let's keep the double diamond but stop using the words that describe stages in the design process.
