Spain reaches the American SouthWest by accident in1530 as shipwrecked Cabeza de Vaca & Esteban, a Moroccan Slave, wander up the Rio Grande.
They collect Native followers and eventually wander in Spanish controlled territory in Mexico.
Their experiences trigger a scouting probe and then the full-fledged Coronado Expedition into the American SouthWest.
Resistance is both overt (Zuni) and covert (Hopi).
