Ingredients :
Chow Chow / Chayote - 2 - finely chopped
Onion / Vengayam - 1 cup - finely chopped
Moong Dal / Split Green Gram - 3/4 cup - soaked in water for at least 1/2 hour - drain water and set aside
Ginger and Garlic / Inji and Poondu - finely chopped
Curry Leaves / Karuveppilai - few
Grated Coconut / Thuruviya Thengai - 1 small cube
Asafetida / Hing / Perungaya Thool
Dried Red Chili / Kaaintha Milagai - few
Turmeric Powder / Manjal Thool - 1 Ts
Mustard and Cumin Seeds / Kaduku and Seerakam
Salt
Oil / Yennai
Method :
Take a pan, add oil and heat it, add mustard and cumin seeds, let it splutter, then add asafetida, ginger, garlic, curry leaves, dried red chili's, saute all the ingredients together well, then add onions, mix and saute it well
After the onions are sauted well for few minutes, add chow chow, mix well, then add moong dal, mix all the ingredients together well, add turmeric powder and salt, also sufficient amount of water for the kootu/ curry to cook, close the lid and let the kootu / curry cook
Now add the grated coconut, once you can see the chow chow is almost ready, cook for few more minutes, and garnish with coriander leaves, mix well, switch off the flame, the recipe is ready
