What is decision making capacity and how to know if a senior has capacity? And what's the difference between capacity vs competence? Or incapacity vs incompetence? You're not alone in asking these questions. Many family caregivers ask "can my elderly parent make their own decisions?" , " can my elderly parent refuse help?" Adult children often don't agree with their aging parents on things like where the senior should live, or if they should get care in the home. Determining capacity in the elderly is an age-old question for family members, and often, the mental capacity in seniors is questioned. Frequently, family caregivers ask how to know if elderly parent is competent. It's not always obvious, but there is a way to get a really good idea about the mental competence of your elderly parent.
In this video, I'll discuss the differences between capacity and competence, because many people get these wrong! I'll also share the 4 aspects of determining capacity in seniors, as well as what to do if you suspect that your parent lacks capacity to make decisions.
