Built in 1931, the Empire State Building is one of the most memorable and recognizable parts of the New York skyline. Its 1454 feet size and Art Deco architectural style makes it stand out among any other building in its vicinity. It was originally built as an office building but the skyscraper’s role in New York exceeded this by being a big cultural landmark.
The 102 story building dethroned Chrysler Building as the tallest building in the world in 1931 and is still the 7th tallest building in New York. The Empire State Building was built in a time of economical crisis during the Great Depression and its owners didn’t even start to make a profit out of the building until the 1950s.
But today, it draws nearly 4 million visitors yearly and is considered to be the symbol of New York along with the Statue of Liberty. It is a big part of pop culture thanks to its many depictions in movies and TV shows and today we are going to look at what makes this enormous building so special.
