An alternative trading system (ATS) is a trading venue that's used to match large buy and sell orders among its subscribers. It's less regulated than an exchange and can account for much of the liquidity found in publicly traded issues worldwide. Dark pools, along with high-frequency trading (HFT), are often criticized by those in the finance industry, and there have been moves to make ATS more transparent through SEC Regulation ATS.
