*Update: Shortly after uploading this video the Gewandhaus Hotel Dresden accused us of stealing products. We didn't and politely told them. They were rude and despite no proof still think we did. So in my book the Gewandhaus Hotel is the worst hotel in Dresden. Stay there if you want to be accused of stealing.*
This week Ben In Berlin travels to Dresden in Saxony, part of the former East Germany. Ben ponders what to do in Dresden, the capital city of Saxony and guides us through 24 hours in Dresden in a few different versions.
Top sightseeing locations include the Frauenkirche - The church that was destroyed shortly before the end of the Second World War, it’s shell stood as a war memorial for 50 years before being rebuilt and opened in 2005. Then there’s the Fürstenzug or Procession of Princes, 24,000 porcelain tiles showcasing mounted procession of the rulers of Saxony - at 102 metres long, it is known as the largest porcelain artwork in the world. Nearby is Dresden Cathedral. Commissioned by Augustus III, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland after his father Augustus II The Strong converted from Lutheran to Catholicism. Augustus II the Strong built the Zwinger Palace to hold huge parties. His first one there lasted for weeks in the gardens. Another top sight is the Semperoper Dresden - the city’s opera house built in 1841, devastated by fire in 1869, rebuilt in 1878, badly destroyed in the Second World War and opened again in 1985.
Ben also visits the Pfunds Molkerei - considered the most beautiful milk shop in the world and included in the Guinness Book of Records. Paul Pfund set up the shop in 1879 with the idea of supplying Dresden with fresh and hygienically perfect milk. You can visit the beautiful restaurant and shops with it’s neo-Renaissance style tiles. Today they sell soap made from milk, a huge range of cheeses and sell a glass of Buttermilk or fresh milk for 1 euro.
RollOn Dresden Bike Hire in the Neustadt was another stop for Ben as he rode from Dresen to pretty Meissen. Dresen sits on the Elbe and there is a famous path which runs next to the river all the way from Czech Republic to the NordSee. Meissen is the home of Meissen porcelain, the Albrechtsburg castle, the Gothic Meissen Cathedral and the Meissen Frauenkirche. As well as many little shops, cafes and restaurants plus shady spots to cool down on a hot summer's day.
Ben eats lots of German food including Eierschecke cake and drinks a couple of tasty German Beers. Including a Radler - to find out more about cycling relationship and history with Radler beer, watch his German Beer Episode here: [ Ссылка ] Plus Ben also listens to some live music at the Palais Sommer which holds free outdoor concerts. Here he enjoys Flammkuchen.
Ben stayed at the Gewandhaus Hotel Dresden, part of the Autograph Collection from Marriott and is located right in the centre of the old part of the city. Plus only 15 minutes away from Dresden Central Train Station.
