STORYLINE
Parts of southern Europe on Thursday were baking in a heatwave that caused temperatures in Turkey and Romania to rise above the seasonal norm.
Temperatures in Istanbul were expected to go up starting in the middle of this week, according to State Meteorology officials.
The heat already started to affect daily life in the city, as tourists struggled to cope with the heat.
One American tourist told AP Television it was a lot warmer than the last time he visited Istanbul.
"But we're still going to enjoy it. We'll stop and have some nice drinks and sweat and love Istanbul like we always do," he added.
Many of the local residents headed for the beach to cool off as the temperature hovered around 31 degrees Celsius (87.8 degrees Fahrenheit)
A heatwave from North Africa was expected to raise temperatures even further at the weekend.
Meanwhile, temperatures in Romania also continued to soar, with thermometers climbing up to 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit).
The heatwave already claimed the lives of at least four people and emergency services telephone lines remained extremely busy, local media reported.
The National Meteorology Administration issued a yellow code warning indicating prolonged heat and heat discomfort for 22 counties across the nation earlier in the week.
Temperatures in the regions were expected to rise as high as 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit) during the period.
