Simple hot chocolate recipe from the Aztecs! Chocolate was a really popular drink in the Aztec and Mayan empires, it was brought to Europe by the Spanish and nowadays it's enjoyed all-over the world. This is a simple version with ingredients that were used in chocolate drinks by the Aztecs. The Spanish described the drink and the ingredients used in different versions when they colonized America. Traditionally the drink was made by baking, peeling and grinding the cocoa beans until it formed a paste and then adding the other ingredients. A more practical way is to use unsweetened cocoa powder.
Ingredients:
1 chili pepper
Water 650ml
Vanilla extract 5ml
Cocoa powder 15g
Recipe: chop the pepper and add it to 200ml of water and let it boil for a few minutes. Once the water is boiling, transfer the water to another pot through a sieve to remove the pepper. Add 450ml of water, the vanilla extract and bring it to a boil, then add the cocoa power and mix until it's an even mixture. You can drink it hot or let it cool before drinking. The drink will be a little spicy and watery compared to modern hot chocolate made with milk.
