'Back to Aleppo' uses virtual reality (VR) technology to take visitors to the museum back to the heyday of the Great Synagogue of Aleppo - one of the most famous places of Jewish worship in the world which was ransacked and burned in 1947 after the UN Partition Vote caused a rapidly crescendoing tide of anti-Jewish fervour to spread throughout the Arab world.
The VR project was made possible in large part thanks to the pioneering work of Sarah Shammah who - at personal risk - travelled back to Syria (she had since immigrated to Israel) in order to photograph the synagogue.
The VR experience uses VR headsets and high quality headphones in order to immerse visitors into the experience of the Synagogue.
It requires a 15 NIS subsidy on top of the regular price of admission to the Museum but is well worth it, in my opinion.
The installation is currently scheduled to run until December 31st 2023.
