"It's a stitch-up for bereaved families”.
The i paper's Housing Correspondent Vicky Spratt speaks with Nazanin Aghlani, whose mother Sakineh Afrasehabi and aunt Fatima Afrasiabi were killed in the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire.
Ms Afrasehabi lived on the eighteenth floor of Grenfell Tower despite the fact she was partially sighted, had severe arthritis and walked with a frame. Nazanin describes her mother's home as a 'death trap'.
Today, the inquiry publishes its final report more than seven years after the fire killed 72 people, destroyed residents’ homes and displaced dozens of survivors.
The report gives a damning assessment of a “poorly” run Department for Housing at the time of the fire.
It cites a 2011 letter from David Cameron calling for a deregulatory agenda as a reason for the “dismissive” attitude of ministers, which meant that the “safety of life” was “ignored” after the Lakanal house fire in 2009.
Former ministers including Lord Eric Pickles, Greg Clark, Don Foster, Stephen Williams and James Wharton are named as being among those in government who were “dismissive” of building safety.
The report says that repeated warnings from select committees were ignored, along with opportunities to prevent another deadly fire.
Ms Aghlani, who works as an architectural designer, claimed beginning the public inquiry before police investigations were underway was a “stitch-up for bereaved families”.
