Red in tooth and claw.
Tennyson’s canto about life and death, while about a loss of a friend, is used over and over to describe Nature…” red in tooth and claw with ravine, shriek’d against his creed.”
This week, the quote seems apt as our guests send us video after video of the painted dogs in Duba Plains, red in every way.
The thrill of the hunt and the chase, as we follow behind these animals, is what so many now come to see, and we teach our guides to be careful about this, careful about people’s emotions because the conclusion is often painted in red. It is one of the great tests of our commitment as conservationists to allow it to happen, to celebrate its expression and freedom, but not the death itself.
So many of our guests write to me saying they were not prepared for this moment, even while wanting to see it, and yet in the gentle hands of an experienced guide, their lives were changed and enriched. Africa is not a Disney film but a privileged to be shared.
The attached snapshot of what our guests saw in the last week at our safari camps is a testament to just how action-packed each day is at Great Plains. Our internal social media bursts each day.
Now the issue is where to be because it is happening everywhere!
