At least 30 people were killed and several dozens injured when a Janta Express train heading towards Varanasi derailed near Bachhrawan Railway Station in India’s northern state of Uttar Pradesh Friday morning.
The express was travelling towards Varanasi when it apparently overshot the signal causing the engine and two coaches to derail. One of the passenger cars was completely crashed and flattened on impact.
Nearby villagers rushed to help when they heard the news.
"There could be more casualties in the mishap," Divisional Commissioner, Lucknow, Mahesh Gupta told Press Trust of India.
Train accidents are common in India, just last month, three coaches of the Bangalore-Ernakulam Intercity Express derailed claiming at least 11 lives.
