Community stakeholders must work together to promote lifelong learning and re-training to safeguard societies against the threat of automation, AI expert Prof. Daniela Rus told delegates. Although intelligent systems are becoming increasingly capable at performing a variety of tasks, humans still considerably outperform machines on critical functions like perception, reasoning, and creativity.
Therefore, Prof. Rus said, industries and organisations should consider the automa-tion of tasks, not professions. Machines can amplify and augment the work we do by taking on routine tasks, allowing us to focus on the tasks we find exciting.
There are two major concerns, however. When a technology is introduced there is always a chance it can compromise both the quality of jobs and wages. The solution, said Prof. Rus, is providing people with the skillset they need in this rapidly evolving job market.
