Dr. Karen Calkins is the Medical Director for Lee Convenient Care. She says people often come in with urine infections or UTI’s. “We actually see that pretty frequently surprisingly in both men and women, may be a little bit more in women than men.”
There are more than 3 million cases of Urinary Tract Infections in the US every year. “They come in with symptoms of urinating more frequently, some discomfort when they urinate, sometimes some blood in the urine,” said Dr. Calkins. If you’re experiencing those symptoms, it’s important that you’re seen by a medical professional. “You can get pretty sick of you ignore it, because it can actually spread sometimes up into the kidneys and it can make you sick all over. People end up with kidney infections and fevers.”
A trip to the Convenient care will start with a consultation so they understand your medical history, then they’ll do an exam. “In the urgent care we can take a urine sample and analyze it here, and then we also send it off for a urine culture,” said Dr. Calkins. Dr. Calkins said most of the time the infection is caused by bacteria that has gotten into the bladder, making it treatable. “Usually about 24 hours on antibiotics and they’re feeling much better.” You can find Lee Health’s Convenient Care locations on Leehealth.org.
