After the German surrender brought an end to the Second World War in Europe, the Allies established the Nuremberg Trials and brought the remaining members of Hitler's government to justice. On trial were two prominent high ranking members of the Wehrmacht and German Military High Command known as the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht. Wilheim Keitel was the long serving chief of the OKW who was seen as a lackey for Hitler, and as a 'Yes Man' who agreed with everything he said. He was seen as a poor military general who never really had much power. But also on trial was the brief serving Head of the OKW Alfred Jodl.
Both Keitel and Jodl were accused of all four counts during the Nuremberg Trials including war crimes, and crimes against humanity. The pair had illustrious careers in the German Army, but they were sentenced to death and were executed as war criminals. However their executioner John C Woods made a number of errors with the Nuremberg Executions, and Keitel's execution in particular went very wrong.
