Tesla Model Y 2025's Range: 9 Things You Should Know about Hardware Next Gen
Cars made in, you know, over the past year have the Hardware 4, um we've just completed design on Hardware 5 which we're now calling AI5
Elon Musk just announced a surprising slate of changes for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) hardware. For the first time, Musk openly discussed details of Tesla’s upcoming FSD Hardware Next-gen, also known as “AI 5.” So, what are the strengths of the new Hardware 5 compared to Hardware 4 and 3? How will Hardware 5 improve the performance of future Tesla models, such as the Model 2, Model Y Juniper, and the robotaxi? Let's dive into these questions in today’s video.
Everything you need to know about Hardware 5
To begin, let’s talk about Tesla's comprehensive plan with the new Hardware 5.

Switching from Hardware 5 to AI 5 will be an Optimus and in all cars in about 18 months um and it's really just a staggering amount of compute and it's very, it's very power efficient compute
As Musk mentioned, the new Hardware 5, which Tesla has renamed to AI 5, is set to be integrated into the Optimus humanoid robot and all Tesla cars within the next 18 months. This means it could be rolled out as early as the first few months of 2026. Musk also hinted on X about an even earlier timeline, suggesting that the new hardware might be available in the second half of next year. However, given Musk's history with ambitious timelines, delays are possible—but better late than never, right?. It's also worth noting that Tesla's new hardware won't use any chips from Nvidia. Instead, Tesla has developed its own chip from scratch.

We started from scratch in chip design just as we started from scratch in AI software uh and have the best real world AI software and the and the best AI inference chip in the world from nothing. So this is, you know, a big deal.
With that, Elon Musk has set an ambitious target of achieving 500 megawatts of power and cooling capacity over the next 18 months or so, with a plan for about half of the AI hardware to be Tesla's own and the other half from Nvidia and other suppliers. However, that's the future plan. For this year, Tesla is still using Hardware 4 and plans to add 50,000 Nvidia H100 AI chips to the existing 35,000 units at its vehicle autonomy data centers by the end of the year.
