On December 31, 1862, Braxton Bragg and the Army of Tennessee launched a flanking maneuver against William S. Rosecrans and the Army of the Cumberland. The dawn attack would have great success, but problems would emerge almost immediately. If it worked, it would severe the Union's escape route to Nashville, TN. For the first few hours, the Confederate juggernaut rolled up the Union line, but Rosecrans would allocate troops for the defense of the Nashville Pike.
