Jeroen Dekervel, MD, PhD, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium, comments on factors affecting individualized first-line systemic treatment for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. A variety of treatment options exist, including immunotherapies with PD-1 and CTLA-4 inhibition and VEGF inhibitors. Dr Dekervel highlights importance of elucidating tumor and liver characteristics and the need for biomarkers, which can guide clinical decision-making.
