A "nexus" is the link or connection between two or more things. Nexus Letters are intended to clearly link a veteran's current medical condition to another service-connected condition or to military service-related circumstances.
A Nexus Letter is required for all secondary conditions caused by military exposure/circumstances that are not included on the Presumptive List. The VA must have clear and definite proof that a condition was caused by military service and no other cause before providing disability benefits. It is the veteran's responsibility to provide this proof. Benefits cannot be granted without proof. An Nexus Letter provides strong evidence that a condition is related to service in the military.
A Nexus Letter must clearly explain how a secondary condition was triggered by a primary condition.
