Build a Deck Tip: Joist Hangers

Lotsa different ways to set joists and joist hangers.

Some carpenters gun nail the joist to the ledger then come back later with hangers. I find the nail heads that are in the way later to be a chafe.

But if you’ve got a few bodies to keep busy, I can see it.

Years ago, we use to set the hanger on the joists, then install them on the ledger but you can’t do that any longer.

For me? I like to set the left side of the hanger on the layout line. Gingerly rest the joist in the open hanger, then with my left hand, close the hanger up.

The impact—with a screw already on it—is them ready to go with a #10 x 1 5/8-er for the ledger. 2 1/2-ers go in the angled holes. Rinse, repeat.
