Were we not told for decades not to come over the top ? Looks like Alex Noren wants to teach himself the opposite, very much to the amusement of PGA tour commentator Nick Faldo.
I was intrigued by this after Tony Smith, PGA golf pro at Golf Range Uster, had explained to me why this may paradoxically indeed lead to the opposite of what you might expect: initiating your downswing with a sternum rotation will lead to the desired hip rotation in the next step. Your shoulders (then arms, then wrists) will follow rather passively, which is indeed the right kinematic sequence that we are all looking for. Of course, we all know that Noren's real drive looked very different from this preshot routine, and it might be advisable to apply this idea carefully and under professional supervision, but once you understand that this movement is not about "chopping wood" but about rotation, you may at least not be left completely puzzled next time you watch Alex Noren on tour.
