Charles Mouton (1617 - before 1699) was a French lutenist and composer who was probably born in Rouen and probably studied with Denis Gaultier. It was around 1680 that Mouton published two collections of pieces for the lute ''Pièces de luth sur différents modes''; the first book includes precious indications on the execution of the pieces. In all, there are over 120 other Mouton pieces scattered in various manuscripts. In 1690, he posed for the portraitist François de Troy whose painting is visible in this video. Mouton's music possesses an mysterious charm and demonstrates great creativity; here is a short unmeasured Prelude which gives a taste of his style.
