I seem to be a little fascinated with this 1978 #1 disco record as it is the 3rd clip I've posted of the track. Considered a One Hit Wonder, the late Karen Young shows what an undervalued and underutilized singer she was with her ebullient and versatile vocal powerhouse on this song. I only discovered it about a decade ago, but as a self confessed musicologist of the retro years of the 1970's and 80's I was veyr pleasantly surprised to have this song in my collection; going so far as to find a collection CD bearing her name; as I wanted to know if there was more to Karen Young than just 'Hot Shot'. It is a really fantastic recording; filled with everything wonderful about the disco genre and a showcase for a voice that not only soars in it, but also dabbles with jazz scats and r&b ingredients making for a distinctive hit, in and among a lot of copycat styled hits of the day. Sadly 'Hot Shot' only climbed to #67 on the Billboard Pop Chart; despite being a #! Dance Club hit. Karen Young died in 1991 at just 39 years young. One can only imagine what that voice might have still been able to sing! Check out my other Karen Young clips - the 12 inch and a single length version.
