This is from a Nov. 30, 1979, performance of "Dancing in the Streets" at the old Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh (now the Benedum Center). To me, this is the band at its best, peaking in a jam with seemingly every melodic instrument soloing at once, but in an interlocking way so that everyone has room to maneuver.
These two '79 Pittsburgh shows (11/30 & 12/1/79) are both monsters, in my opinion. This is about six months after Brent Mydland replaced Keith Godchaux on keys. He's starting to find his footing, and the tone of his keyboard is a lot more 'tinkly' than the fuller sound palette he'd be adding in a couple years' time. Shows from '79 can be a bit spotty, but they also have a lot of sonic room to breathe compared to the chunkier jams in '80s Dead shows.
