Since the inception of reservations for Native Americans, the indigenous landscapes have in many cases survived traumas not unlike those sustained by Native peoples themselves.
This short film focuses on the Mohave, a Yuman tribe on the Colorado River, who have seen their land and way of life change dramatically in the span of just a few generations. In 1945 the Federal Government reserved portions of the Mohave/Chemehuevi reservation for colonization by Hopis and Navajos. These four tribes began the transformation of a wild, fertile river valley, teeming with life, into farmland.
Then, in 1995, the Ahakhav Tribal Preserve was established through a multi generational community effort focused on the reclamation of several miles of the Colorado River. The unique aspect of the story is that the effort was an important return to Mohave traditions. The story is told through voices and recollections of adults and elders who want to pass on the legacy to the younger generations.
